Controlling Protein Function with Nanotechnology

A new study led by nanotechnology and biotechnology experts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is providing important details on how proteins in our bodies interact with nanomaterials. In their new study, published in the Feb. 2 online edition of the journal Nano Letters, the researchers developed a new tool to determine the orientation of proteins on different nanostructures. The discovery is a key step in the effort to control the orientation, structure, and function of proteins in the body using nanomaterials.

Rensselaer Appoints Biotechnology, Administrative, and Education Leader Jonathan S. Dordick as Vice President for Research

Jonathan S. Dordick, the current director of the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) and Howard P. Isermann Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been appointed vice president for research, effective today.


 “Dr. Dordick brings a wealth of research experience, academic administrative talent, pedagogical leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit to the position as we seek to raise the level and impact of our research programs through the next stages of The Rensselaer Plan,” President Jackson said.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Professor Honored with Prestigious Distinction, Will Meet President of Germany

Professor Ganpati Ramanath has been named a winner of the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.


Given in recognition of Ramanath’s research record and accomplishments in the fields of nanomaterials and interfaces, the award includes an invitation to meet the president of Germany, and to spend up to one year in the country as a visiting scholar at research institutions to collaborate on long-term research projects.

Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering Expert Richard Gross Joins Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Richard Gross, an expert on biocatalytic and chemical synthetic methods, has joined Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a chair in the Biocatalysis and Metabolic Engineering Constellation, and professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Gross is currently the Herman F. Mark Chaired Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU Poly).

Polymer materials expert Chang Ryu has been named acting head of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and director of Polymer Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  Ryu joined Rensselaer as an assistant professor of chemistry and chemical biology in 2000, and was promoted to associate professor in 2006 and full professor in 2013......
